John Woolley Ltd are proud to be a sponsor of the The British Indoor Carriage Driving Championships being held on 14th to 16th of April 2023 at Arena UK near Grantham in Lincolnshire.
For millennia, horses have been used to draw carriages, carts, mail coaches and war chariots. As a means of transport, driven horses were central to mankind’s day-to-day existence right up until the arrival of the internal combustion engine in the early twentieth century. So, it’s quite surprising to learn that carriage driving trials, which give an opportunity for contestants and their horses to show off their speed, agility and good looks, only came into existence in this country in 1968. It was in this year that HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh initiated and oversaw the formulation of the sport’s rules. Now, nearing its 60th anniversary, competitive carriage driving is going from strength to strength.
The indoor version came into being some 25 years ago and was the brainchild of Dick Carey who wanted to give like-minded drivers the chance to compete during the winter. The sport now operates in 26 areas in the UK, offering events between October and March, and culminating in the annual Indoor Championships in April.
