It was an early start on Monday for our Tracey Butterworth who caught the ferry over to the Isle Of Wight to attend the annual Gilten Market. This year Southern Counties Auctioneers held this much-loved traditional event at Tapnell Farm, near Freshwater.
Over the Solent at the crack of dawn.
It was Tracey’s first trip over to the Island for John Woolley Ltd and she spent the day supporting the team from Southern Counties with their duties of the day: herding the sheep into the pens; reading the ear tags on the cattle and recording them ready for the day; running sale sheets back to the office as the auction progressed.
Judging such fine animals can't be hurried...
The champion steer went to Barry Isaacson for his British Blue x.
It was a triumphant day for Matt Legge of Duxmore as he took both the Supreme Championship for the ‘Gilten’ Beast for the first time and was awarded Reserve Champion with his homebred Limousin x heifers.

Why do they always face the same way?
We were proud to have been one of the sponsors of the day and look forward to returning next year…….now onto our preparations for the Southern Counties Christmas Show next Tuesday, 28th November – we hope to see Ewes all there!
